Free Woodworking Plan: The Versatile Media Cabinet

The Versatile Media Cabinet is an appropriate title for this woodworking plan; all you have to do is look at the front cover to see why. The cover shows four different arrangements of drawers and shelves. I originally designed it with five drawers hinted at in the lower right image and I also like the eight drawer version. For the sake of simplicity, I show how to make the three drawer version, but a knowledgeable woodworker could alter the plan to make use of these other layouts.

This media cabinet is designed to be easy to build and gains a bit of flair from the use of figured wood as an accent. The gray paint plays up the easy theme since a painted surface enables the woodworker free use of nails (paint can also hide certain defects and wood blemishes after being repaired). I have toyed with the idea of returning to a more simple way of building furniture and nothing could be easier than nails and glue. But the main carcass joinery is via dadoes – a tight dado has never failed me and with some planning, such joinery isn’t hard to master. For the drawers, I currently use dowel pinned drawer fronts instead of dovetails. A row cherry or walnut dowels looks sharp when pine or poplar are selected for drawer sides. Here too, I have had no problems with drawer failure with dowels.

At 24 pages, the plan is longish, but I don’t have to worry about space limitations like magazine publishers do (I once heard Bob Lang, then with Popular Woodworking, say that often project articles become an exercise in how much explanation can be taken out and still have a functioning project plan). This plan is full of images and I let them play a big role in communicating the construction process. There are full-color images as well as gray-scale ones. Take a look…

I consider this to be an intermediate level project due to the glue-up of the four boards needed for the top. These boards are over five feet long and getting a gap-free glue-up can be tricky unless you have properly tuned tools.

I have triple checked the plan for accuracy. Be sure to fully understand the construction process prior to building your media cabinet. If you have any questions about the construction process, send me a message by using the form on my About/Contact page.

This woodworking plan is number twelve in my collection and it marks a new effort at using SketchUp and Photoshop to provide illustrations. This is also my first plan using Microsoft Publisher 2013 which brings some new capabilities in page layout and improved graphic elements. Also slightly different: this plan is more book format vs. my usual magazine template. Lots of new things with this plan, so I am pretty stoked to get it live on my blog.

    • Hey Andrew, thanks. That is about the most detailed I’d ever want to make plans be. My next one will be much more simple. šŸ™‚

  1. Wow, 24 pages of instruction! That’s some really nice work. Very detailed, clear and easy to follow. Well done! My simple little one and two page plans make me feel like a slacker. LOL

    • I know, 24 pages! I actually combined two pages to make it more compact. Thanks for the compliment. Your hand drawn images are excellent.
